Alert: Lockhart Basin Oil Well ---------------- SUWA Local Alert ---------------- Contents: (1) Lockhart Basin (2) Letters on "Dead Goose" still needed (3) Misc. ==== (1) Lockhart Basin ==== Lockhart Basin is part of the Canyonlands Basin and lies just east of Canyonlands National Park. It is part of a 50,000+ acre roadless area suitable for wilderness designation. It was within the original proposed boundaries for the park (before those boundaries were whittled down for political reasons), and there has recently been talk of expanding Canyonlands NP to include Lockhart Basin and other adjacent areas. It forms the backdrop for many of the spectacular views from Island in the Sky and Dead Horse Point. Unfortunately, Legacy Energy Corporation would prefer to see an oil production field in the area, and has filed for a permit to drill the first well. The BLM has not yet made a final decision, but they are leaning toward approving the well. Our best hope for stopping this well is to demonstrate to the BLM that there will be a large public outcry if they approve it. Send letters to Bill Lamb, State Director BLM State Office P.O. Box 45155 Salt Lake City, UT 84145-0155 If possible also send a copy of your letter to Kent Walter, Area Manager San Juan Resource Area, BLM P.O. Box 7 Monticello, UT 84535 Points you might want to raise in your letter: * The proposed well site is in one of the most scenic areas in the entire state. The only difference between this well and one within a national park is an arbitrary line on a map. * BLM should be working to preserve Utah's few remaining roadless, wild areas. Instead, it seems to be doing its best to carve them up with roads and development. * Lockhart Basin is just north of an area (lower Indian Creek) that has seen a great deal of off-road vehicle abuse in recent years. The new road construction associated with the oil well would pave the way (so to speak) for more ORV abuse to spread to Lockhart Basin. * The well is located within critical habitat for desert bighorn sheep. ==== (2) Letters on "Dead Goose" still needed ==== If you haven't already written a letter on the "Dead Goose" timber sale / road improvement / road closure project, it's not too late to do so.
