I am in the process of preparing a best practice guide to field teaching
dealing with equity and access issues.
Field trips are too often designed according to the normative assumption that
all the participating students will be young, healthy and whole, physically
active, white Western, heterosexual, middle class males who will happily
participate in the macho field trip traditions of roughing-it, alcohol abuse,
obscenity and horseplay. Field trips designed according to this normative
assumption have the effect of either excluding a diverse range of students
from participating in particular subjects/courses or of ensuring that a
diverse range of students will receive an inferior learning experience in
subjects/courses where field trips are made non-compulsory as a way of
avoiding having to deal with student diversity.
The best practice guide will suggest ways that field teachers can meet their
educational objectives and not only accommodate but value the diversity of the
students who may want or need to participate in subjects/courses with a field-
based teaching component.

might assist me with the preparation of my guide or if you have some expertise
in this area and would be willing to be part of my Reference Group for this
project, please contact me as indicated hereafter, unless you think others on
the list might be interested in your information. Both field trip horror
stories and success stories would also be a welcome addition to the interviews
I plan to conduct with university students and staff in South Australia.
