Subject: This is a call for an expression of interest in participating in
the panel "Forest History of Melanesia", in the planned 12th Pacific
History Association Conference to be held at Honiara, Solomon Islands, 7-10
July 1998.

Although the topic details Melanesia, other Pacific Islands regions will
also be of interest, so do not feel restricted. Possible topics might be:
Traditional uses of the forest in old and modern Pacific; changing
perceptions of the forest and "nature"; postcolonial environmental
protection in the Pacific; women and forest use over time; early
logging/milling ventures, eg, sandalwood, kauri; Asian business linkages in
the timber industry; ethics of the timber industry; sustainablilty of
forest resources in an historical and contemporary perspective; education
of forestry workers; the development of forestry departments; ecology of
plantation forestry and implications for native species; NGOs and their
involvement in forest use; international aid and forests; the role of the
state in the use of the forest resource in colonial and post-colonial
states; legislation for forest use-policy vs practice; and subsidising
local protection of forest ecology-governments and NGOS. Other possible
related topics are welcome. Further details re venue and accommodation will
be sent on request.

What would you propose? Short papers of 3,000-5,000 words and
posters and short video clips are welcome.  Please submit a 300-500 words
abstract to Judith A. Bennett at Dept of History, University of Otago, PO
box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand by November 30, 1997. Selection by December
30, 1997.  Final papers must be submitted by May 30, 1998.
