Abstract (100 words) Deadline: 1 September 1997 (e-mail submissions are
encouraged)
The Institute of Contemporary British History are organising a conference
on the above theme in London on 20-22 April 1998.
The conference aims to be a forum for historical and geographical research
into the origins and development of nationality. Themes will include
analysis of the uneven nature of the process of the development of national
identity, and of the emergence of nationalism within territorially based
ancien regime states; the role in forging identity of cultural (language,
gender, religion, the media, sport, encounters with "the other", etc) and
political (state forms, wars, boundaries) factors; how far identity is
constructed by, as Hobsbawn and Ranger argue, 'The Invention of Tradition',
and the uses to which it is put. Furthermore, the significance of 'nation'
in political and cultural terms will be considered in relationship to other
important and in some cases countervailing forms of identity such as
religion, region, tribe or class. Finally, it is hoped that the
relationship between national identities and the rise of supranational
aspirations (ranging from Esperantoism to the European Union) can be
explored.
It is hoped that the topics addressed at the conference will range widely,
both chronologically and geographically in their scope.
Session at the conference may include:
the rise of nationalism
national identity and mental maps
nation, state and region
culture and national identity
the invention of tradition
nationalism and supranationalism
Empire, colonialism and nationalism
identity, landscape and environment
homelands and territorial integrity
gender and national identity
national identity and archaeology
national and sub-national identities
The Institute of Contemporary British History (ICBH) invites all interested
in giving papers to send a 100 word abstract by 1 September 1997 to:
