The future doesn't just happen. Actions and decisions made now shape the
future of our planet and our descendants. There is much scientific
evidence that human activities are destroying the life support systems of
the Earth. The composition of the atmosphere is being changed, soils are
being lost, species of plants and animals are being threatened or
extinguished, and our air and water are being polluted. A minority of
today's generation is using up much of the Earth's resources,
disadvantaging most of the present population, all future generations, and
other species. As our economic system depends on the integrity of
ecosystems, it too is unsustainable. With appropriate ethical principles
and the political will, we can make a difference and create a future that
is sustainable for all.
"sustainability-l" is a discussion forum and information list for
researchers working on these issues. Topics for discussion will vary
widely, but might include:
- critique of government policies and procedures
- dissemination of information about topical issues
- information on conferences and seminars
- sharing information about resources
- discussion between disciplines
"sustainability-l" aims to promote, encourage and support contributions
relevant to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Conference
and seminar
information relating to these issues will be posted to the list, although
not necessarily the papers presented.
If you would like to be included in a register of sustainability
researchers which will be posted to all sustainability-l subscribers,
please complete the form at the bottom of this page.

send a brief message introducing yourself, using the subject line
"INTRODUCTION: your_name", and tell the community about your interests.
Experience with other lists suggests this is a great way of building an
understanding of common interests and developing new linkages.
