TITLE:          Director, Colorado Natural Heritage Program
SUPERVISOR:     Colorado State Director

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Director of the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) is responsible 
for the growth, viability and stability of the CNHP, assuring that it has the 
capacity to meet its mandate as a statewide clearinghouse for 
biodiversity-related information, including use of Natural Heritage 
methodology.  This includes developing and implementing short- and long-range 
plans, fundraising, negotiating contracts, and implementing project activities 
to accomplish objectives.  The Director must work collaboratively with state 
and federal agencies, corporations, academic institutions, private 
organizations, legislators and individuals.  S/he must have scientific 
expertise in an ecological discipline and provide sound scientific direction 
to the program.  Duties are carried out under the guidance of The Nature 
Conservancy's Colorado State Director and Colorado State University.  The 
Director supervises the staff of the CNHP.

The CNHP is a sponsored program of Colorado State University's (CSU) 
Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and is administered through a 
cooperative partnership between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Colorado 
State University.

DUTIES:
1. Provide leadership and manage operations of the CNHP to assure the ongoing 
acquisition, development and dissemination of high-priority information on 
Colorado's biological features and other natural resources as appropriate.
2. Raise funds for program operations, co-op positions, special projects and 
other activities.  Solicit and negotiate major contracts and gifts, and 
cultivate new potential funding sources.
3. Manage, develop and coordinate the objectives of CNHP employees (currently 
appx. 40 regular, seasonal and part-time staff) which include scientists, data 
management and administrative staff, contractors, interns and volunteers.
4. Work cooperatively with Colorado State University, Colorado Division of 
Wildlife, and the Great Outdoors Colorado Board to assure the long-term 
viability of and support for the CNHP and to ensure the continuance of the 
partnership.
 5. Monitor the financial status of program operations and projects to ensure 
overall fiscal health, stability and accountability.  Meet all contract/grant 
fiscal, administrative, and product requirements.  Maintain positive net 
balances in financial accounts.
6. Provide scientific direction in consultation with senior science and 
information staff on strategic and annual planning related to the acquisition, 
management, analysis and dissemination of biological data.
7. Provide support and direction, in conjunction with the Colorado Field 
Office, for implementation of the Conservancy's ecoregion and other 
ecosystem-wide conservation efforts in Colorado.
8. Develop and maintain a strong and collaborative relationship with all key 
partners including the Colorado Field Office and its Board of Trustees, local, 
state and federal government agencies, elected representatives, and the 
business, academic, and conservation communities.
9. Develop and foster broad public awareness of, and support for, the 
continued operation of the CNHP and the application of its information.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Advanced degree and a minimum of five years successful and applicable work 
experience in biological sciences or conservation, natural resource 
management, or information sciences, with a strong ecological background.
2. A minimum of five years administrative, management and supervisory 
experience, including project management, grants and contracts administration, 
and application of basic accounting principles.
3. Proven ability to administer a complex program with multiple priorities, 
and to effectively recruit, manage and develop a highly-dedicated and 
competent professional staff.
4. Demonstrated ability to raise funds, write proposals, and negotiate grants 
and contracts.
5. Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.  Public 
speaking skills required.  Ability to work effectively with a wide range of 
people.
6. Familiarity with the Network of Natural Heritage Programs and Natural 
Heritage methodology preferred.
7. The ability and willingness to travel frequently, often on short notice, 
overnight, and on weekends.
8. Commitment to the goals of The Nature Conservancy.
