I would like to second Cheryl Taylor's comment about ecovillages, and
Carolyn Gage's comment about contemporary feminism.

I have taught Starhawk's futuristic novel, "The Fifth Sacred Thing," in my
course on gender roles. The novel describes an ecofeminist society that
is eventually invaded by a fascistic group. An important element of the
book is its emphasis on multicultural perspectives as an integral part of
an ecofeminist village. Demonstrating that such perspectives cannot
"legitimately" exist in a society that operates under the dominator
paradigm (except as characteristics of the lowest castes), the novel also
makes the connection between militarism and eco-terrorism, and the refusal
to honor/respect earth's resources.

I would love to hear what others on this list thought of the book. --E.M.
