Mother is to the Catholic religion and she's not male! Thanks - Angela >>

This is true. My problem with the Catholic Church is probably more with
practice than religion (i.e. no female priests, no marriage among priests,
idea of no birth control, no abortion, etc.) I just feel that the church
caters more to men.

Subject: living with the land

Dear Joan,

Do buy some land. Sort the ethics out when you are lying on it touching it,
feeling it. The best is deep wilderness land. You will be dissolved by
the winds. You will literally become a power animal, not some invented
fantasy of new-age shamanism.

You might like to try sharing owning it. I am a member of a sixteen strong
conservation community - 16 family shares in a collective company with a
very tight environmental constitution. We bought in 1970. We are mixed
race, working class and middle class. Now we could never afford it. It has
transformed our lives. It is very difficult working together, but it has
given our children an experience that is not a surrogate for ethnic roots -
we are the shamans, we are the guardians, we are the tohungas of this land.
When faced with the abyss of wilderness even white middle class people
become Shipibos of themselves.

Our ashes are scattered there. We argue and sometimes feud like all
village communities. Meetings are often quite difficult. We have
archetypal gender disputes. We will inevitably end up flowing deep into
the ecofeminist watershed of hystery given the odd circumstances we find
ourselves in. It is a supreme twist of poetic irony.

The point is this - we are caring for the land forever. That spot can
regenerate because many of us own it together and collectively owned we are
quite unlikely to sell it again. 100% have to agree and if anyone tries to
wind up the company all proceeds go into a private trust for another 20
year cooling period. It is now marking evolutionary time, albeit under
attack by possums, stoats magpies and other exotic predators. There are
still kiwis. Each time I sit in the night I hope I can still wait in the
moonlight for the call of the female with joy mingled with disbelief!

love to you all, Chris King
