     1ST ANNOUNCEMENT:

     (Please Distribute widely)

ELECTRONIC CONFERENCE ON RESEARCH AND BIODIVERSITY

     WEB site: http://www.gencat.es/mediamb/biodiv E-mail
     [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A European Working Group on Research and Biodiversity (EWGRB) was
established by the European Comission (DG XII) in 1996. Its goal is to
identify the main needs and priorities in the field of Biodiversity
Research, in order to provide the knowledge and the main tools to
achieve an effective protection and management of Biodiversity in a
     European context.

Considering that a fluent and direct dialogue between scientists and
the wider community is the best way to achieve a consensus, an
Electronic Conference on Research and Biodiversity has been programmed
within the framework of the EWGRB.

The Electronic Conference will run from 20 April to 31 May, 1998.

The project is financed by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, and
the European Comission (DG XII). The design and organization of this
activity is done by the Ministry of Environment of the Autonomous
Government of Catalonia, together with the EWGRB.

The E-Conference is open to everyone who wants to express, to suggest
or to share an idea, opinion or worry related to Biodiversity
Research. Everybody is encouraged to take part in the Conference. The
     following means will be available:

-An ELECTRONIC MAIL LIST (LIST SERVER) will act as the main tool for
communication. All participants will be able to subscribe to the
mailing list, and so will be able to send and receive e-mails, express
opinions, raise questions or answer queries in a common forum.

-A WORLD WIDE WEB SITE will act partly as a support for the discussion
based on e-mail, partly as a guide through the conference work. It
will also inform about the EWGRB, the Conference, Biodiversity
     Research and other related subjects.

-A DISCUSSION FORUM will present a weekly selection of outstanding
representatives of the different sectors related to Biodiversity.
Contributions will fall into one of these groups:

-Land Use, Land Planning and Transport -Agriculture, Livestock and
     Aquaculture -Fisheries, Forestry and Hunting
     -Energy, Industry and Pollution
     -Nature Conservation and Scientific Research
-Tourism and Leisure Activities and Social Perception (inc. education,
     law, public awareness...)

Participants will be able to send their opinions, and to comment on
the previous contributions, to reply and counter-reply.

-A CHAT (IRC SERVER) where participants will be given the opportunity
to establish a simultaneous common dialogue with multiple participants
to discuss freely and online on research needs or on specific
     subjects.

Contributions are expected from end-users of all sorts (fishermen,
farmers, bussinessmen, policy-makers, civil servants, land-planners,
hunters, students...) and scientists who want to express their ideas,
opinions, worries and suggestions related to Biodiversity Research.

A special effort will be made to provide an equal participation to all
sectors. The more participation and contributions coming from
different points of view, the more ground will be available in order
to set the priorities and needs of Biodiversity Research, so that
efforts can be directed in the right way.

The Conference may be followed on the Internet by visiting the
     following addresses:
