What is the Know How Conference?
The Know How Conference on the World of Women's Information is a process, which will
cumulate in a global meeting of women's information centres in Amsterdam, in August
1998. Its mission is to improve the accessibility and visibility of women's
information services throughout the world.
Hundreds of women's information centres and women's archives, their activities as
diverse as their geography, work to strengthen the position of women. Our visibility
and accessibility is essential to our work and a prerequisite to proper policy making
at international, national and local government levels.
To ensure a truly global effort, the Know How Conference is committed to creating a
forum where ideas and experiences from the South, North, West and East are equally
represented.
It will be innovative, professional and dynamic. One of its exciting outcomes will be
the Mapping the World project, a comprehensive overview of women's information
facilities: their work, their goals, their achievements. The material collected will
be in a variety of forms, including audio-visual and print, all of which will be
incorporated in the final product.
Who is organizing the Know How Conference?
The International Information Centre and Archives for the Women's Movement in the
Netherlands is hosting the Know How Conference. The IIAV was founded in 1935 as a
private initiative, then as now an international resource and research centre. For the
past 20 years the IIAV has enjoyed national government funding, and has grown to
become the Dutch focal point for the international exchange of information. All 35
staff look forward to welcoming the 'world of women's information' in their beautiful
library in August 1998.

The permanent members of the Know How Conference Organizing Committee are
Ms Lin Pugh, project manager
Ms Ansje Roepman, fundraising and publicity
Ms Petra Branderhorst, fundraising
Ms Marlise Mensink, programme co-ordinator
Supported by staff of the IIAV, Ms Marieke Kramer as Senior Adviser and Ms Jessica
L'Esperance

Organize and join in pre- and post- Know How Conference activities
.. Organize national or regional meetings of women's information services before the
Know How Conference to discuss how the participants from your region can best
represent the local women's information services. These meetings will be your own
initiative, but please report on the proceedings to the Know How Conference, as it
will interest us all!
.. Organize meetings after the Know How Conference to report back on what was achieved
at the Conference and to plan regional follow-up activities.
.. Send articles to the International Newsletter, an official communication instrument
throughout the Know How Conference. Publication dates are June 1st and October 1st,
1998.
.. Send material for the Know How Conference's Mapping the World project.

Participate in the Know How Conference in Amsterdam, 22-26 August 1998
Not all people who provide women's information services will be able to attend the
Know How Conference in Amsterdam. The meeting will be limited to 300 participants; a
large meeting but small enough for effective communication. Two hundred and fifty
people will be from women's information services, representing local, national,
grassroots, and university level activities. Fifty participants will be from the
'second circle': information technology experts, politicians and policy makers.
At the Know How Conference delegates will represent their world of women's
information. Broadly speaking there will be a limit to three delegates per country,
except where this conflicts with the representation of migrant women, Indigenous women
and lesbian women. If more than three women from any one homogenous community
register, the conference organizers will contact each woman to pass on the names of
the other women. It will be the responsibility of these women to decide who will
attend the conference.

If financial assistance is needed...
To ensure global representation, the Know How Conference Organizing Committee is
raising funds to help cover costs to enable delegates from the South and Eastern
Europe to attend. This funding is limited. The expenses for which assistance can be
applied include full travel costs, accommodation, daily allowance and registration
fees.
Funding through the Know How Conference is additional to your own search for funding.
Contact the Know How Organizing Committee as soon as possible to discuss strategies.

        Eligibility for funding
. You represent a women's information project or service.
. Your participation is endorsed by other information services or women's
projects in your country.
. You undertake activities to represent the interests of other women's
information services, for example by arranging meetings with other women's information
services before and after the meeting.

Programme summary
The Know How Conference in Amsterdam will offer presentations, hands-on Information
Communications Technology workshops, a preliminary meeting of Indigenous women, a
social programme and a working programme.
There is a limited area available for stands and displays. Contact Lin Pugh for more
information.

One hundred and forty two people representing 67 countries responded to the initial
announcement of the Know How Conference. Their proposals form the basis of the working
programme. The working programme is organized along four tracks. Keynote speakers will
address the topics of the tracks, and participants will work together in a workshop
environment. The programme will highlight women's information services, will look at
future perspectives and will develop strategies, alliances and coalitions.

Track 1. The professional development of women's libraries, archives, documentation
centres and information centres
How do we develop searching tools for gender-specific information on the Internet? How
do we develop professional training in our field? How do we use new technologies to
our advantage? How do we maintain a practice of learning from each other? As
professional information collectors and disseminators it is important to develop the
'tools of our trade'.

Track 2. Policy decisions within the collections
In some countries the amount of information that is available to collect is so diverse
that decisions have to be made on which themes to collect and disseminate information.
In other countries there is such a lack of information that the task of women's
information services is to produce information. Multicultural collections, lesbian
archives, working with Indigenous knowledge and women's studies collections are themes
in this track.

Track 3. Women's information as an instrument for policy-making
In the Platform for Action of the United Nations Women's World Conference, Beijing,
1995, Strategic Objective 3H was defined as "Generate and disseminate gender
disaggregated data and information for planning and evaluation." Statement 237 reads
"Women should be empowered by enhancing their skills, knowledge and access to
information technology." The vital task of women's information services in the
implementation of these objectives is an important theme in this track, as is the role
of our services in the protection of human rights.

Track 4. Developing the policy of women's information and positioning ourselves in the
world of information services
