The only thing to bear in mind is that humans with free-will are much
harder to apply reductionistic arguments to than mercury contamination, and
for a good reason.
Ecolady: I agree with this and I think it is very important to keep in mind
when dealing with the eco-crisis! But can you elaborate on this?

Chris: Not sure if you mean free-will or fertility, so here's briefly for both:
Free-will and violence: The worst sins, from genocide to male violence
against women, are committed when people treat one another as objects. It
is at this point that our endowment of kin and reciprocal altruism fails.
The 'outsider' is dead meat. Our shared emotions are a second heritage
which helps us bridge these problems, by 'feeling for one another'. The
first step of healing is to love one's 'enemies' even if we know they have
done terrible things. This incites their free-will. If we treat living
beings as objects, even violent males, we are not only passing away the
whole meaning of existence, but we are doing precisely that which causes
the root error in the first place. By embracing free-will, we all gain the
choice to heal our common dilemmas. Effective action still requires tough
love, and addressing the cultural heritage and the sociobiology, even
though it is the epitaph for male reproductive dominion.
Fertility: Reproductive mania and fertility are quite different. A
male-chauvanistic image of fertility is having more babies - competitive
reproduction. The immortal biosphere teaches us something profoundly
different. Fertility is a principle of diversification and 'survival of the
survivors'. It involves symbiosis as well as competition. Even predator
and prey are often interdependent in their population dynamics. The
fertility of the germ-line as a whole is a far more complex system than
free-market winner-take-all competition. The most complex dynamical system
outside the human brain (or inside!)
