But there are other ways to punish that would do that as well, without all
the moral stickiness that capital punishment gets us into. 

I quote the bumper sticker that changed my opinion about capital
punishment: "why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing
people is wrong?"

It's so clear after that, to me. If we are truly to have ideals and
morals, we have to stick to them absolutely: killing people is morally
wrong. Therefore we cannot kill people. 


And, Mr. Joe Dees, I find your apparent inability to have a rational
doscussion without hurtling disgusting insults ("you should be a
defense lawyer for a rapist"!) quite lousy. No one wants to listen to
opinions that are distainfully spat out at them rather than carefully and
calmly (though not dispassionately, don't misunderstand) reasoned
through. I sure don't, that's why I'm beginning to delete all your posts.

I don't understand what's happening to listservs, people are so terribly
rude lately. But, on the other hand, at least we're talking about
something real, something besides lewinsk-what's-her-name and the
back-to-school sales at Marshall Fields, like the rest of the country
seems to be.
