Women in Appalachia and the U.S. South are often associated with deeply rooted myths 
and conventions which are obscured, challenged, and illuminated by contemporary 
scholarship.  This Special Issue, 
    _the role of women in public and private education
    _women's roles in public and private work
    _regional women artists & writers, including music, drama, film, & dance
    _gendered ethnicity issues
   _the changing labor market
    _sustainable communities
    _women and political action
    _the new immigration
    _the new New South
    _women and religion
    _the new spirituality
   _health, wellness, and healing
    _ecology, environment, sustainability
    _welfare systems and the urban poor
   _regional studies:  pedagogical issues
    _media images
    _issues in Southern or Appalachian women's history
    _Women's Studies in the South
    _same-sex education in the South
   _ethics and values, old and new
    _women in the Civil Rights Movement
    _multiculturalism in the South or Appalachia
    _sexualities

The Special Issue is planned for Fall 1999 and will highlight the centennial of the 
founding of Appalachian State University in 1899.  Deadline for 300 word abstracts is
