Hi all,
Just thought I'd mention that once upon a time in England, many old women
were murdered by the authorities for being old and having a cat (black cats
were considered most unfavourably). My mother lives with me and we have 4
cats including a black persian (adopted/rescued from an ex-breeder) who
is definitely a cat that throws "witchy" looks. I suppose we would have been
ideal candidates for the male driven persecution of women back then.
Isn't it sad that women were victimised and accused of being witches and
that a childs testimony was enough to cause an old lady to be burnt to death.
("Yes I saw her change her cat into a toad"). It is so hard to picture that
people were so cruel to older women and that so many died. Even today , I hear
derogatory terms used towards older women (even by younger women) and I find
this strange. On television, there are very few older women appearing as
commentators yet there are many older men. It seems that we deny accepting that
aging women are an acceptable part of society yet we accept that aging men
are still acceptable from a cosmetic and authoritarian point of view. This is
quite sad to see in our so-called "enlightened age"'
Also, with regards to women attaining the vote, women were beaten and abused
by males (including their husbands) for asking for the right to vote. These
women
worked so hard for equality and basic rights for women. It seems we still
have a long way to go since women are often still viewed as belongings or a
second rate class of humans by many men based on our body structure and
ability to have children rather than being viewed as mental equals (just my
view).
