this is a can of worms, but i will say that for me, becoming a vegetarian
was more about reconnecting myself to the rest of nature than saving the
rights of animals....when i began to see how our culture relates to other
animals..in an objectifying way..rather than in a survvalist way..and for
that matter eats way way too much of it (so that its both unhealthy AND
depletes the amount of meat people in post/neo-colonial societies get..i
realized that there was ne need for me to eat it anyway since i, as a
human, can be perfectly healthy without it..and since i had too fallen
into the cultures trappings concerning meat. we are all sold on the
"benefits" of meat by the capitalist industry who makes money off it!! if
thats not suspicious what is?? and besides, if we lived in the same world
as cats, or tigers or bears, i would be all for torturing our prey as
much as our instincts told us too......but we humans have really fuzzed
the lines between instinct and overconsumption. the very existence of
the meat industry is a capitalist idea. we dont know where it comes from.
we dont know what it was fed and we dont know whos land was destroyed in order
to raise it.
who knows if i lived on a
farm and raised pigs and had a family, id probably eat them. but at this
point in my life, i have no desire to objectify animals or teach my
children to do so.
all i know is this is the last internet list id expect to be answering
this question on. i didnt think this was such a mystery anymore.
