Yes, these are all very much blanket statements that are being made
here. What does one mean by development (a rhetorical question) and
second, how is it the root of root of most developing countries'ills. It
is also the root of a lot of the developing countries successes-lower
rates of mortality, education, etc. In order to be objective in this
debate (which may not be appropriate for THIS list), we need to look at
the alternative which is a world without a lot of caring people who have
dedicated themselves to trying to help others (yes, I know, a part of the
'development community' may not be categorized like this). Shall we just
leave the developing countries to find their own solutions where most of
these countries are ruled by corrupt leaders? Or, why can we not
continue along this "development" road to try to undo a lot of the harm
that has been done already. Don't forget, we are humans who inherently
make mistakes. The field of development is relatively new with little
background to go on. The background that we DO have today is helping us
find better ways of assisting local populations through "empowerment"
(aka these people make the choices about where THEY want to go). Would
it not be worse to just have the people who are assisting developing
countries throw their hands up, say "we give up" and leave the developing
countries "high and dry." Then we'd be accussed of selfishness. I
honestly believe that there are not too many people in developing
countries who believe they would be better off without a lot of the
development assistance which has already taken place.
