This is a good point to the previous post about taxing large families. Taking
the right of reproduction away from anyone is wrong. The answer to
overpopulation is EDUCATION and FREEDOM - educated free women and men make
educated free decisions. Based on the current information given me - I, being
an educated, free woman have decided to incorporate the environmental crisis
into my decision not to have more children at this time. Given the right
amount of knowledge about the decision and the freedom to choose - I believe
that most people would make the right decision and reproduce wisely. Taking
away the privilege is NOT the answer.
Re: being wrongheaded on this issue - I did not say that overpopulation is
not a problem - I said that it is not at the root of the problem - and not the
only cause of the eco-crisis - overpopulation is caused by other things - lack
of freedom and education, poverty . . .

How about a limited and shrinking amount of livable and arable (food-
producing) space, combined with an exponential population
increase? The poor, btw, reproduce at a much higher rate than the
wealthy already, due to traditional (and often coerced) submission to
religious authority combined with papal and other clerical
pronouncements opposing birth control, to the use of child labor as
a family survival resource and to the creation of caregivers to
support their eventually elderly parents when they reach adulthood.
I would be overjoyed if the wealthy and the poor would agree to
reproduce at the same (low) rate!

Kelly, I'm assuming you don't have kids, or at least not more than one.
Large taxes based on income aren't going to discourage reproduction.
They (kids)aren't cheap to keep as it is. I don't know anyone who has
ever said they had kids because they can afford to. If someone wants to
bring a child into this world, the money issue will not stop them. The
people that are here now have to educate themselves about
overpopulation, and the misuse and overconsumption of the earth's
resources. If they still make the *CHOICE* to reproduce, we can only
hope that they limit themselves, find ways to reduce waste and
consumption and raise children to be more aware of and actively involved
in these issues than in the past.
Friends of mine are in China right now adopting a little girl. The
living conditions for her first 9 months of life have been tragic. They
spent a lot to go through the process. If they were to come home
expecting huge tax increases for having this child, she and many others
would still be without loving homes and safe living conditions.
What do you suppose the government would WASTE all that extra money on
anyway? I am sure it would not be on education.
