In 1996, world reknowned scientists told us that global warming is already occurring. Since that time, real life experience has driven that message home. Recent events are all consistent with scientists predictions of global warming will bring. * The 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1980, the hottest year ever on record is 1997, and the hottest January through August on record occurred in 1998. * Severe floods like the devastating Midwestern floods of 1993 and 1997 are becoming more common. * Infectious diseases are moving into new areas including the recent outbreaks of Dengue fever in Texas and Malaria in New Jersey. Pollution from the U.S. is responsible for at least 22% of the world's global warming emissions. Yet there are currently no limits on the chemicals that cause global warming. At the international Climate Summit last December in Kyoto, Japan, nations agreed to reduce emissions of heat- trapping gases that cause global warming. The agreement is a small but important step to limit global warming. However, many important details remain to be decided. A major international meeting to hammer out the details will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, November 2-13, 1998. In order to make progress there, the United States must show other nations that we are serious about reducing the threat of global warming. The United States must lead by example and take steps to cut emissions of gases that cause global warming. Your participation is essential. Fortunately, solutions exist to cut our global warming emissions. Decision makers in the United States should support the following * Increasing fuel efficiency standards to 45 miles per gallon for cars and 34 miles per gallons for light trucks would cut millions of tons of CO2 pollution while decreasing our dependence on foreign oil. * Capping CO2 from power plants would cut millions of tons of CO2 pollution while decreasing the pollution that causes acid rain, smog, and respiratory illness. * Shifting investment from fossil fuels like coal and oil to renewable energy and energy efficiency would allow cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy to take their rightful place as market leaders. * Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol would be a modest but important first step toward international emissions reductions.
