CALL FOR PAPERS
1999 Conference on Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy
June 18-19, 1999
Ryerson Polytechnic University
The focus of this conference will be science fiction and fantasy in a
Canadian context. Papers will cover a broad range of topics, from
biographical work, to pedagogical issues, to analyses of texts in their
social, cultural, and political context. Papers may explore works in any
medium: literature, film, graphic novels and comic books, and poetry.
For studies of the audio-visual media, preference will be given to
discussions of works produced in Canada or involving substantial
Canadian creative contributions. Papers may be submitted in either
English or French for consideration.
We invite proposals for papers in any area pertaining to Canadian
science fiction and fantasy, including:
� definitions of science fiction and fantasy: international and regional
influences
� metaphors of borders and border crossings in Canadian science fiction
� representations of Canada as a "utopian space" in works of American
science fiction
� comparisons of American and Canadian works in the genre
works that challenge the boundary between science fiction and fantasy
� science fiction and ethnic/minority discourses
� representations of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered experience
� special panel on gender, sexuality and genre conventions in sf and
speculative
fiction
� the relationship between Canadian science fiction and popular culture
� biographical work on Canadian science fiction authors
� special panel on electronic modes of writing (fanfic, roleplay, fluff)
In addition to conference papers, the program will include a keynote
speaker, a writer's panel, and a panel on science fiction and pedagogy.
We also welcome proposals adaptable to that discussion panel format.

Cette conf�rence portera sur la science-fiction et le
fantastique dans un contexte canadien. Les communications embrasseront
un large domaine, du travail biographique aux questions p�dagogiques et
� l'analyse des textes dans leur contextes sociaux, culturels et
politiques. Les communications pourront examiner des oeuvres de tout
genre: la litt�rature, le cin�ma, le roman graphique et les bandes
dessin�es, ou la po�sie. En ce qui a trait aux �tudes des m�dia
audio-visuels, on donnera la priorit� aux discussions portant sur des
oeuvres r�alis�es au Canada ou comportant une contribution cr�ative
importante par des Canadiens. Les communications pourront �tre
pr�sent�es en anglais ou en fran�ais."
