A friend of mine (an activist) is seperated from her husband (he couldn't handle coming home and finding rescued water birds recovering from botulism in the bath) and she seems to have sympathies with the Aboriginals. She told me tonight that she stood on the side of a highway with 2 Aboriginals who were holding up their flag in protest at a development on a registered Aboriginal site. Someone from this site came out, pulled the flag from the Aboriginal and broke it and stomped it into the ground then started to punch the Aboriginal. My friend tried to take a photo (she always has a camera with her) and the madman then turned on her and tried to pull the camera from round her neck. Something happened and he ran towards the river and she followed to get a photo but then he jumped in a car and tried to run her over! The two Aboriginals were too scared to press charges so my friend has given a written statement to police. She will take it to court and is frightened she may lose her house to legal fees but she feels she has to set an example to the Aboriginals and others that they should not let themselves be attacked and bullied. Apparently, this man who works on this well known development site has been involved in disputes before and "goes mad" when he sees an Aboriginal flag! Why is it that single people with principles are having to take on such matters? I can't understand it. This same lady goes to the saleyards and demands that the cattle going to sale are not left standing in the heat with no water for days (our RSPCA is quite apathetic to animals destined for slaughter). She believes that the animals deserve dignity in the last days of their lives including the right to have a drink of water. The men at the saleyards verbally abuse her sometimes. She also goes into the Aboriginal camps and has their sick dogs and cats treated for illnesses which they would otherwise be left suffering with. Since she started doing this, the Aboriginals (she says) are starting to treat their own animals better. Finally, she has more than her quota of abandoned cats that she looks after personally. This lady, of German origin, makes me feel quite humble in her attempts to put things right. She is on the committee for population control and has hung off bulldozers while trying to stop them downing trees over one hundred years old.
