The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture
invites submissions for its biennial Dissertation Colloquium, to be
held on Saturday, May 15, 1999, at Columbia University. This event
convenes a select group of doctoral students working in fields related
to the history, theory, and criticism of American architecture,
urbanism, and landscape. Its purpose is to provide a forum for
discussion of the most innovative scholarship being carried out by
students in these fields. Eight to ten students from universities in
the United States and abroad will be selected to take part. Each
participant will make a twenty-minute presentation of his or her
research, followed by a response from a distinguished scholar and
general discussion. "American" may be understood to mean any part or
aspect of the American continent, including all of North and South
America. Comparative and cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Doctoral students wishing to present papers should submit a complete
draft, postmarked no later than Monday, February 15, 1999. Students
must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program and must have
completed all of their coursework and at least one year of their
dissertation research. Papers must be accompanied by a cover sheet
specifying the student's overall dissertation topic; photocopies of
illustrations; one sealed letter of recommendation from the student's
principal advisor. Faxed submissions will not be accepted. Application
materials will not be returned.

Papers for presentation will be announced by March 15. Each
participating student will receive an honorarium of $250. An additional
$250 toward travel expenses will be available to students coming from
outside a 300-mile radius of New York City. A reception and dinner will
follow the colloquium.

The Temple Hoyne Buell CEnter for the Study of American Architecture,
founded in 1982, is part of Columbia University's Graduate School of

of American architecture, urbanism, and landscape through a variety of
scholarly and public programs.
