Each participant will make a twenty-minute presentation of his or her research, followed by a response from a distinguished scholar and general discussion. "American" may be understood to mean any part or aspect of the American continent, including all of North and South America. Comparative and cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged. Doctoral students wishing to present papers should submit a complete draft, postmarked no later than Monday, February 15, 1999. Students must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program and must have completed all of their coursework and at least one year of their dissertation research. Papers must be accompanied by a cover sheet specifying the student's overall dissertation topic; photocopies of illustrations; one sealed letter of recommendation from the student's principal advisor.
