Stefanie Rixecker ECOFEM Coordinator ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- National Postgraduate Scheme in Urban and Environmental Studies Thematic Course - 31 January - 5 February 1999 The next thematic course of the National Postgraduate Scheme in Urban and Environmental Studies will be held in the first week of February, 1999, at the Australian National University in Canberra. Designed to provide a forum for the discussion of current issues in urban and environmental studies in Australia, the Scheme gives particular emphasis to interests emerging in postgraduate research and the challenges of interdisciplinary study. It is structured around a series of presentations from experts in a wide range of areas (from universities, government, community groups and the private sector) and a series of workshops on current debates in these areas. Details of the program and speakers will be available soon at http://coombs.anu.edu.au/Depts/RSSS/UrbanResearch/index.html Each student is required to give a short (15-20 minute) presentation on their research topic, drawing out central themes. Formerly the Federated PhD Scheme in Housing and Urban Studies (established in 1992), this program is one of the few formal supports for interdisciplinary postgraduate education in Australia. It is designed to address needs ranging from 'networking' to the critical engagement with theory. The areas of urban and environmental studies are broadly defined to encompass the full range of debate in 'spatial social science', the changing interests of students, and the diversity of expertise available to the Scheme. The Scheme is administered by a National Advisorial Committee, which shapes each course and determines the selection of participants. To be eligible to attend, students must be: 1. enrolled in an Australian university 2. currently working on the thesis component of their postgraduate studies (preferably on Australian-based topics) 3. have the backing of their head of department. Accommodation is provided on campus and a contribution is paid towards travel expenses. Participating universities are invited to support a student's attendance through a contribution of $500, although attendance is not dependent on full payment of this amount.
