Indonesia admits rapes during riots JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - The Indonesian government admitted for the first time on Monday that women were gang raped during May riots that pushed former President Suharto from power. But the government of President B.J. Habibie said the number of rapes, most of them against ethnic Chinese, was lower than the 66 reported by an expert panel last month. State Secretariat Minister Akbar Tanjung said the government denied claims that "mass and systematic rapes" took place. The November report was produced by a government-convened panel of human rights activists, senior police officers, lawyers and other to investigate the violent riots which erupted in the capital Jakarta and other cities on May 13-15.
