2000-01 FULBRIGHT CHAIRS PROGRAM
DEADLINE: MAY 3, 1999
The following Fulbright awards carry enhanced benefits and are viewed
as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Program.
Lecturing is in English. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and have a
prominent record of scholarly accomplishment.
AUSTRIA - FULBRIGHT-KARL FRANZENS UNIVERSITY CHAIR IN CULTURAL STUDIES:
Grantee will offer courses in an area of the scholar's expertise at
advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. Course level and content
are to be arranged on a consensual basis with the host institution.
Grantee should be a scholar-teacher with interests in fields centrally
associated with cultural studies. There is a particular interest in
scholars involved in theoretical and methodological issues and
interdisciplinary approaches. Some knowledge of German is desirable.
Faculty of Humanities, Graz. Four months, starting October 2000 or
March 2001. Benefits: 60,000 Austrian schillings per month, travel for
grantee only, and monthly allowance of 2,000 schillings per
accompanying dependent.
AUSTRIA - FULBRIGHT-UNIVERSITY OF INNSBRUCK CHAIR IN LAW: Grantee will
offer two lecture courses and one seminar to undergraduate and graduate
students. The grantee should be a scholar-teacher with interests in
American private law or economic law. Desired subfields include
antitrust law, contracts, corporations, intellectual property,
international business transactions, securities or unfair trade.
Interest in European civil law and willingness to team-teach expected.
Some knowledge of German is desirable. Faculty of Law. Benefits:
60,000 Austrian schillings per month, travel for grantee only, and
monthly allowance of 2,000 schillings per accompanying dependent.

CANADA - FULBRIGHT-UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY CHAIR IN NORTH AMERICAN
STUDIES: Grantee will teach graduate and undergraduate courses.
Particular interest in areas of anthropology, archaeology, economics,
linguistics, geography, history, political science, and sociology with
other social science areas considered. Six months, starting September
2000. Benefits: approximately US/Canadian $35,000 (contingent upon
funding).
CANADA - FULBRIGHT - UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK CHAIR IN PROPERTY
SYSTEMS: Grantee will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in
property systems as approached from one of the following disciplines:
law, economics, public administration, business, geography,
environmental studies or agriculture. One academic term beginning
September 2000 or January 2001. Benefits: approximately $25,000
(contingent upon funding).
CANADA - FULBRIGHT - UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO CHAIR IN NORTH AMERICAN
TRADE AND PUBLIC POLICY: Lecture at graduate and undergraduate levels
in North American trade and public policy. Offer public lectures,
participate in conferences and engage in research. Nine months,
starting September 2000. Benefits: approximately $15,000 with matching
funds to be sought (contingent upon funding).
DENMARK - ODENSE CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES: Grantee will teach
undergraduate and graduate courses. Disciplines of interest include
American history, American literature, political science, cultural
studies (such as art, film, or music history), sociology, international
relations, economics, or business administration. Preference is for an
interdisciplinary scholar who is active in the field of American
Studies. Center for American Studies, Odense University. Nine months,
starting September 2000. Benefits: 315,000 Danish kroner and free
health care for family.
FINLAND - BICENTENNIAL CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES: Grantee will teach
survey of an American studies area and special topics in area of
expertise. A teaching load of approximately six hours per week and
supervision of graduate theses. Occasional guest lectures at other
universities and consultation on curriculum. Disciplines of interest
include American history, American literature, cultural studies (such
as art, film, or music history), international relations, sociology, or
political science. University of Helsinki. Nine months, starting
September 2000. Benefits: $5,555 per month paid in local currency plus
travel for grantee and one dependent and excess baggage allowance.
Actual number of finnmarks per month depends upon local currency
exchange rate. Housing is provided, but grantee is responsible for
utilities.
GERMANY - DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES: Grantee will teach
graduate courses in American studies broadly defined. There is
special interest in political science or American history. The chair is
suitable for scholars who have had little or no prior experience with
Germany. Occasional lectures outside the host institution and other
outreach activities involving American Studies outreach in Germany.
Humboldt University, Berlin. Full-year appointment preferred, though a
one-term grant may be possible, starting September 2000. Benefits for
a ten month grant: approximately DM 90,000 for maintenance and all
other benefits. The exact amount depends on actual duration of grant,
number of dependents, and other factors.
HUNGARY - JOHN MARSHALL CHAIR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE: Grantee will teach
an advanced undergraduate course on U.S. government, politics, and
political institutions, one or more advanced courses or faculty
seminars in area of specialization, and consult on development of
political science curriculum. Background in comparative political or
parliamentary systems desirable. Budapest University of Economic
Sciences or another Hungarian institution. Five or nine months;
September 2000 or February 2001 for one-semester grants; September 2000
for academic-year grants (preferred). Benefits: approximately $3500 per
month, plus housing, in-country maintenance,travel and dependent
allowances, based on number of dependents.
HUNGARY - LASZLO ORSZAGH CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES: Grantee will teach
courses, direct research, and offer lectures or seminars at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. Scholar may also offer short-term
courses for Hungarian faculty and will assist in curriculum
development. Applications accepted from any of the several disciplines
comprising American Studies, including but not limited to, history, art
history, philosophy, literature, political science, sociology, and
religion. Priority will be given to specialists in 19th- and
20th-century U.S. history, society, or political life. Affiliation to
be determined. Five or nine months beginning September 2000 for
academic-year grants; September 2000 or February 2001 for one-semester
grants. Benefits: approximately $3500 per month, plus housing,
in-country maintenance, travel and dependent allowances, based on
number of dependents.
IRELAND - MARY BALL WASHINGTON CHAIR IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Grantee
will teach at advanced undergraduate level, one broadly based course
and two specialized courses, in addition to tutorials. Host
institution's preference is for specialist in 20th-century American
diplomatic history, the U.S. presidency, or American political history,
although other subfields will be considered. Department of Modern
History, University College Dublin (UCD). Both senior and junior
scholars will be considered. Nine months, starting September/October
2000. Benefits: 42,000 Irish punts from UCD and $5,000 U.S. dollar
grant (total @ $55,000).
ITALY -- BOLOGNA CHAIR IN AMERICAN HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE: The
University has particular interest in American intellectual or
political history, American political science, political theory
(theories of liberalism and nationalism). Comparative approach
preferred. Grantee will provide one seminar and some guest lectures to
advanced undergraduate students. Occasional lectures at other
universities. Department of Politics, Institutions, and History,
University of Bologna. Three months, starting, February 2001. Benefits:
16.8 million Italian lire, 200,000 lire per month for each
accompanying dependent, 1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus
international travel for grantee only.
ITALY - FLORENCE CHAIR IN POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES: Grantee will
offer one seminar and thesis advising to doctoral students.
Specializations desired include European integration process and
specific problem pressures (i.e. immigration, capital flow), state
market relations and inequalities, and democratic theory and
democratization processes. Political and Social Sciences Department,
European University Institute, Florence. Three months, starting,
October 2000, January or April 20001. Benefits: 16.8 million lire
stipend, 4,800,000 lire housing allowance, 200, 000 lire a month per
accompanying dependent, 1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus
international travel for grantee only.
ITALY-NAPLES CHAIR IN SIGNAL PROCESSING: Grantee will offer lectures on
digital processing applied to gravitational wave detection. Award is
open to engineers and physicists. Department of Physical Science,
University of Naples. Opportunity for research. Benefits: 16.8 million
Italian lire, 200,000 lire per month for each accompanying dependent,
1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus international travel for
grantee only.
ITALY - PISA CHAIR IN HISTORIOGRAPHY OF TOTALITARIANISM: Grantee will
offer one introductory lecturing course and one seminar.
Specialization in historiography of the Holocaust desired. Sant'Anna
School of University Studies and Doctoral Research, Pisa, three months.
Benefits: 16.8 million Italian lire, 200,000 lire per month for each
accompanying dependent, 1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus
international travel for grantee only.
ITALY - SIENA CHAIR IN ECONOMICS: Grantee will offer eight lectures to
graduate students. Strongly preferred area is economic theory
(including mathematical economics and game theory). Also of interest
are fiscal and monetary policy, international transportation economics,
micro/macro international economics, public economics, and comparative
economics. Faculty of Economics and Banking, University of Siena.
Three months between April and June 2001. Benefits: 16.8 million
Italian lire, 200,000 lire each month per accompanying dependent,
1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus international travel for
grantee only.
ITALY - TRENTO CHAIR IN COMPARATIVE LAW: Grantee is expected to offer
one course, which may be an individual course or part of the existing
curriculum, and to give at least two seminars to graduate students.
Field of specialization is open. Some knowledge of European legal
systems and a comparative approach in teaching are preferred.
Associate professor or full professor with degree in law or related
field. Open to legal professionals with record of publications and
teaching experience. School of Law, University of Trento. Three
months, March-May 2001. Benefits: 16.8 million Italian lire, 200,000
lire each month per accompanying dependent, 1,500,000 lire settling-in
allowance, plus international travel for grantee only.
ITALY - VENICE CHAIR IN LINGUISTICS AND PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE:
University seeks full professor to offer one lecturing course and
tutorials at graduate level. Subject expertise desired is theoretical
linguistics especially syntax. Three months, March-June 2001.
University of Venice. Benefits: 16.8 million Italian lire, 200,000 lire
each month per accompanying dependent, 1,500,000 lire settling-in
allowance, plus international travel for grantee only.
ITALY - TUSCIA (VITERBO) CHAIR IN INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS: Grantee will
teach one course on globalization to advanced undergraduate students.
Thesis advising. Grantee should be at associate professor rank or above
with ten years experience. Three months beginning March 2001.
Universite degli Studi della Tuscia, Viterbo. Benefits: 16.8 million
Italian lire, 200,000 lire per month for each accompanying dependent,
1,500,000 lire settling-in allowance, plus international travel for
grantee only.
NETHERLANDS - JOHN ADAMS CHAIR IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Grantee will
offer advanced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in American
history. Limited supervision of graduate theses and consultation on
the curriculum. The Fulbright Commission will arrange affiliation with
one of five Dutch universities with an American Studies Department.
Full Professor. Four months, starting September 2000 or January 2001.
Benefits: $20,000 plus international travel (up to a maximum of $1,000)
for grantee only.
NETHERLANDS - THOMAS JEFFERSON CHAIR IN AMERICAN SOCIAL STUDIES (FOR
JUNIOR OR SENIOR SCHOLARS): Grantee will teach undergraduate courses in
one of more of the social science disciplines within American studies,
including law, economics, or political science. Limited supervision of
graduate theses and consultation on the curriculum. The Fulbright
Commission will arrange affiliation with one of five Dutch universities
with an American Studies Department. Four months, starting September
2000 or January 2001. Benefits: $16,000 (junior scholars or those
below the rank of full professor) $20,000 (full professor) plus
international travel (up to a maximum of $1,000) for grantee only.
NETHERLANDS - WALT WHITMAN CHAIR IN AMERICAN LITERATURE (FOR JUNIOR OR
SENIOR SCHOLARS): Grantee will offer undergraduate courses and
graduate seminars in American literature. Limited supervision of
graduate theses and consultation on the curriculum. The Fulbright
Commission will arrange affiliation with one of five Dutch universities
with an American Studies Department. Four months, starting September
2000 or January 2001. Benefits: $16,000 (junior scholars or those

international travel (up to a maximum of $1,000) for grantee only.
POLAND - CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES/AMERICAN LITERATURE: Grantee will
teach courses, direct research, and offer lectures or seminars at the
undergraduate and graduate levels in American literature or American
culture and society. Assist in curriculum development and offer
short-term courses for Polish faculty as requested. Special interest
in 20th-century literature, including women's, ethnic, modernist, and
postmodern literature; literary theory, or popular culture and media.
Five or nine months beginning mid-September 2000 for academic-year
grants; mid-September 2000 or February 2001 for one-semester grants.
Marie Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin; University of Warsaw,
Jagiellonian University, Krakow; or University of Lodz. Benefits:
approximately $3600 per month, plus housing, travel and dependent
allowances based on number of dependents; book allowance.
POLAND - WARSAW CHAIR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE: Grantee will teach
courses, direct research, and offer lectures or seminars at the
undergraduate and graduate levels on the American political system.
Assist in curriculum development, including consultation on
introduction of Ph.D. program. Interest in the Presidency, Congress,
U.S. domestic politics, electoral politics and lobbying, the American
political tradition. Five or nine months beginning mid-September 2000
for academic-year grants; mid- September or February 2001 for
one-semester grants. Benefits: approximately $3600 per month, plus
housing, travel and dependent allowances based on number of dependents;
book allowance.
PORTUGAL - PORTUGUESE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY, LISBON: Three Fulbright-FLAD
Chairs which require a doctorate and eight years teaching experience.
Teach and provide research leadership in the MBA program and in special
programs for professionals, student counseling and curriculum
development. Three months, $3,500 per month, round-trip airfare for
grantee, housing provided by host institution. 1) Chair in Business
Administration ( new product development, marketing management,
business strategy, internationalization, information systems
management, strategic financial planning), beginning September 2000 2)
Chair in Management (information systems management, marketing
research, advertising management, international business, and
information resources management), beginning January 2001 3) Chair in
Business and Marketing Strategy (industrial marketing, investment and
security markets, international business strategy, change management),
beginning April 2001
RUSSIA - MOSCOW CHAIR IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Grantee will teach advanced
undergraduate and graduate level American history courses. Open to all
specializations. Associate or Full Professor. Department of History,
Moscow State University. Five months, starting January/February 2001.
Benefits: $3,500 per month base stipend plus maintenance allowance
which was in the range of $1,000-1,400 per month during 1997-98.
Amount is determined by number of accompanying dependents. There is
also a travel/relocation allowance which ranged from $3,500-8,500
during 1997-98 and is determined by the number of dependents.
SWEDEN - UPPSALA CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES: Grantee will teach one
introductory undergraduate course and one graduate course in area of
expertise. Disciplines of interest include American history,
literature or politics. Grantee will also supervise student research
and give an inaugural lecture at the start of the first term. The
Swedish Institute for North American Studies, Uppsala University. Nine
months, beginning September 2000. Benefits: SEK 350,000, baggage
allowance and round-trip travel for grantee only.
