FOR THE LOVE OF NATURE? 24-28 June 1999

For the Love of Nature? is an International, Interdisciplinary Conference
Exploring many aspects of the Relationship between Humanity and Nature. It
will bring together thinkers and practitioners from all walks of life who
work at or are concerned with the interface between humanity and the
more-than-human world. It will be a unique chance to meet and make friends
with colleagues from a variety of disciplines and cultures who share a love
of the natural world and a concern for our mutual welfare.

For the Love of Nature? poses some fundamental questions:

*     What is 'nature'?
* What is our relationship to nature?
* Are we a part of nature?
* Is nature a part of us?

Themes of the conference are:

* Nature as Healer, Self as Nature: ecopsychology and ecotherapy.
* Interspecies Communication: the sentience of all beings.
* Knowing Nature and the Nature of Knowing: ecophilosophy, ecofeminism
and postmodernism.
* Governing Nature: ethics, politics and sustainability.
* Cultures of Activism: education and action for change.
* (Dis)Honouring Natures' Patterns?: ecodesign, technology and
responsibility.

NB: All optional events have limited capacity.
Book early to avoid disappointment.

- How much does the conference cost?

The standard conference fee, including full board accommodation, is 295 UK
Pounds Sterling. All bookings can be paid in full at the first instance;
however the minimum payment to reserve your place is 75 Pounds Sterling,
which is non-refundable.
Late bookings after 1st May 1999 will be charged an extra 25 Pounds
Sterling late booking fee (i.e. total 320 Pounds Sterling ) and can only be
accepted subject to space availability.

- What about bursaries?

There is a limited bursary fund designed to help those who are not able to
find the full fee. It is open to all participants and speakers to donate to
this fund so that others without the monetary means may be allowed to attend.

Please let us know if you wish to apply to the bursary fund, by sending a
statement (between 100 and 400 words) via email or standard post
detailing your circumstances and the reasons you want to attend, as well
as an amount that you would be willing/able to pay in order to attend, in the
event that only partial bursaries are available.

- How can I book a place?

Early registration is recommended as the main conference will be limited to
300 participants. The simplest way to Register and Pay is via the web site
( http://www.clan.com/environment/che/ ), or by sending an email with
your credit card details to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

The alternative way is to send a cheque or international money order which
MUST be in Pounds Sterling, made payable to Centre For Human Ecology, to the
CHE address below.

- What accommodation can I expect?

Most on-site accommodation at the venue is shared rooms. A limited number
of single and double rooms are available on payment of a supplement -
please ask us. Findhorn can accommodate 120 participants. Those who book
later will therefore *need to arrange their own accommodation* in local
venues (Bed &
Breakfast/Hotel), with a slight reduction to their overall conference fee.
We are willing to help facilitate this by providing a local accommodations
list. Delicious vegetarian lunch and dinner will be provided by the
Foundation for all conference participants.

- Who is organising it?

The conference is being organised by the Centre for Human Ecology, the
Edinburgh based 'green' think tank, founded in 1972, which is Scotland's
leading catalyst and advocate for ecological thinking, with the endorsement
of the Institute for Deep Ecology in London, an educational forum which
aims to facilitate and contribute to the development of deep ecology.
Additional organisational support is being provided by the conference team
at The Findhorn Foundation.
