Dear LGBTST Activist,

The Millions for Mumia, April 24th Mobilization is organizing Rainbow
Flags for Mumia, a national contingent of LGBTST peoples in support of a
new trial for African-American political prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal. A
mass outpouring of people are expected to march in both Philadelphia and
San Franscisco on April 24th.

The Millions for Mumia, April 24th Mobilization has been endorsed by
over 500 individuals and organizations. Endorsers include Alice Walker,
Pam Africa, Angela Davis, African Ancestral Lesbians United for Societal
Change, Barbara Smith, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Susan Sarandon, Leslie
Feinberg, The National Body of the Black Mens Xchange, Holly Hughes,
Nancy Nangeroni, The Intl. Lesbian and Gay Human Rights Commission, Joan
Nestle, The National Latino/a Lesbaina and Gay Organization, Ed Asner,
Ossie Davis, Pride At Work: The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender Labor Organization, State Senator Tom Duane, The New York
City Anti-Violence Project, Morris Kight, Geronimo ji Jaga (Pratt),
James Green, Ani DiFranco, and Jewelle Gomez.

Communities across the country are organizing contingents. Latina/os
for Mumia are mobilizing, in Boston; Hartford and  Bridgeport, CT;
Providence, Rhode Island; New York; New Jersey; Washington, DC; and
Philadelphia. Under the leadership of civil rights leader Yuri
Kochiyama, Asians for Mumia are sponsoring buses cities on both coasts.
The LGBTST contingent, Rainbow Flags for Mumia, is growing rapidly with
over 150 endorsements nationally and contingents being built out of New
York, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia,
Los Angeles, Tucson, and several other cities.

We are asking groups to mobilize their memberships and constituencies to
the Philadelphia and San Francisco marches on April 24. We are asking
if it would be possible for yourself as activist or your organization to
endorse the Rainbow Flags contingent and offer organizational support to
build it.

Would it be possible for your organization to include Rainbow Flags for
Mumia information in your next mailing, emails or newsletter? Would it
be possible for your organization to sponsor a community meeting or
serve as a distribution center for leaflets and information on the
contingent? Most importantly, can you help to organize buses, vans, or
car caravan to Philadelphia or San Fransisco?

Enclosed are the Rainbow Flags for Mumia statement and endorser lists.
Please contact us for an activist kit or if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Minnie Bruce Pratt Nick Wood Jesse Heiwa Dawn Reel Gery Armsby

LESBIAN, GAY, BI, TWO-SPIRIT, TRANS PEOPLE DEMAND:
NEW TRIAL FOR MUMIA ABU JAMAL
BUILD THE RAINBOW FLAGS CONTINGENT
in the April 24th Millions For Mumia Demonstration
STOP THE EXECUTION!

WHO IS MUMIA ABU-JAMAL?
Mumia is a former Black Panther and a lifelong fighter against racism,
repression and police brutality. He is a widely published author and
radio commentator who is known as the voice of the voiceless.

In 1981 Mumia was framed for the murder of a white police officer in
Philadelphia. All the evidence, however, indicates that Mumia is
innocent. Lawyers and supporters for Mumia revealed, for example, that
witnesses were intimidated by the police and coerced into giving false
testimony. As part of this unfair trial, the prosecution used his
political activism to smear him in order to obtain a conviction.
Mumia was sentenced to death. For the last seventeen years he has been
a political prisoner on Death Row. His last appeal to the State of
Pennsylvania has been denied, despite the fact that witnesses who had
been intimidated by the police have now come forward.

He could be executed within six months.

WHY SHOULD LBGTST PEOPLE SUPPORT MUMIA?
The LGBTST community has been in the forefront of every struggle in this
country--reproductive rights, the fight against racism, AIDS, in union
struggles, and the anti-war movement.
Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans peoples experience first-hand
police brutality and repression--from raids in trans and gay bars to the
police attacks and brutality against us. We understand what it means to
be harassed, arrested, and jailed for just being who we are.
The execution of Mumia would be the killing of a political activist with
State sanction. It would be a green light to right-wing forces that
provoke attacks like those against James Byrd in Jasper, TX, Matthew
Shepard in Laramie, WY, and Dr. Barnett Slepian in Buffalo, NY.
WE CAN WIN A NEW TRIAL FOR MUMIA.
We can strike a blow at the same forces that want to push our community
back. That means that a victory for Mumia is a victory for us. `Thats
why we have to be in Philadelphia on April 24th, --Mumias birthday.
