unleesh, I have indeed heard of (and seen in practice) using human
manure as fertilizer, but I'm not sure the volume would be sufficient
for a large group--I will check out the book you mentioned.  Since I
posed that question, I have come up with more answers as well (I mull
things over during my surgeries!):  many plants naturally fertilize as
they grow (legumes); rotating plants from field to field because
certain plants use certain nutrients in the soil and other plants use
others; allowing a field to remain fallow for a period of time to
regain nutrients; and combining plants in one area for a symbiotic
effect.  There are probably more, but these are some I thought of
without research. So we could probably sustain ourselves on a vegan
diet without having to supplement the soil with fertilizer.   nan
