I read an article in french about chemical pollution, caused by
pesticide, in a
Montreal (Quebec) suburb call St-Raphael-de-l�Ile-Bizard. More than 50%
of the
territory of that island is used as golf courses (total of 4) and farming.
Herbicide containing 2,4-D is used and parents suspect that pesticide is
responsible for their children cancer.
In Quebec, one child of 5 800 (under 19 years old) has cancer each year
(Federal Health Ministry). At Ile-Bizard, the cancer rate is about 9
cases over
4 000 children per years (18 cases since the last two years). Canadian
government is starting a research about it in collaboration with the
St-Justine
Hospital.
In the article there is the case of a 11 years old boy, Jean Dominic
Levesque-Ren{ living in that suburb who has cancer (lymphome non
hodgkinien - in
french). Relating to that case, his mother, Monique Levesque, accidently
spilled
some herbicide (containing 2,4-D) on the inside of her leg in 1986. Two
months
later, a dark spot start growing at the same place on her skin. Five year
later,
a dermatologist diagnose a (melamome malin - in french) type of cancer. The
herbicide contain an hormone that kill herbs that you dont want on a golf
course, by making them growing very very fast.

Action Alert from the Climate Summit in Berlin
Tuesday, April 4, 1995
US citizens have a chance to influence the negotiations at the
climate conference in Berlin by contacting President Bill
Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and Undersecretary of State Tim
Wirth to let them know what you think of the US position.
Only the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) has had the
courage to take the leadership in this climate summit by tabling
a protocol proposal that calls for 20% cuts in CO2 emissions.
The US has not yet commented on this proposal, let alone thought
about adopting it.
In an amazing development, China, India, and Brazil have
supported the AOSIS protocol and offered a proposal for action on
it. The US is trying to water down this proposal and is
potentially throwing away a tremendous opportunity.
Why is this happening? Why is the US lumping itself in with
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, who are also opposed to the AOSIS
protocol? It seems as though Newt Gingrich is here in Berlin,
dictating a US isolationist policy.
The US still has time to welcome the AOSIS protocol and show some
signs of the leadership that we all had expected from our Vice
President on this issue. Undersecretary of State Tim Wirth
arrives in Berlin today. He must turn a deaf ear to the fossil
fuel industry, recognize the offer by developing countries, and
save the US from embarrassment.
What you can do:
Send a fax or call President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and
Undersecretary of State Tim Wirth. Tell them to support the
AOSIS protocol and ensure that a mandate for emissions reduction
negotiations comes out of Berlin.
You should FAX or EMAIL your letter, or CALL, immediately - the
negotiations end on Friday, 7 April!
