Kylie mentioned Gandhi today ... it's a good segue to a book I've wanted
to discuss in this group for a long time. Interestingly enough the book,
called "The Soul of Politics" by Jim Wlalis, is written by an evangelist
Christian who stands firmly in opposition to the action of the religious
right in the United States. Here is a quote from his introduction:
"Several decades ago, Mohandas K. Gandhi warned against what he called
the seven social sins. He named them as politics without principle,
wealth without work, commerce without morality, pleasure without
consdience, education without character, science without humanity, and
worship without sacrifice. These social sins today provide an apt
description of our leading institutions and cultural patterns; they are
the accepted practices of the life of the nation (United States)."
The book is very powerful, and, IMO, an extremely worthwhile read,
especially for those of us who want to keep spirituality and activism
working together. He's talking to all of us.
