There are other things you and others can do. They take time and
committment however and I am not saying you have the spare time. But
perhaps just a little sometimes. Every little bit helps. (Remember Chaos
theory).
your present political system relys on people who are informed to vote.
Most people who vote are at least middle class or above. before Bill
clinton was elected people went around encouraging people to vote. I
believe this is how he beat the republicans. I also believe that voting is
not just a right but a responsibility. There are many other ways the
political system could be used to aid in the process. I really am too
tired to list them now, but I'm sure you could think of them.
consciousness raising of the issues where ever you get the chance. Don't
vote republican! Make wiser consumer choices - try to avoid buying cash
crops such as coffee. I did say try :) Most of all don't become
complacent. This is not just aimed at Amercan readers either. The above
political stuff can be altered to fit any nation. I try to educate
Australians about the preferential voting system wherever I can. I always
work on polling day. etc etc.

I didn't mean to come across this way. But them I guess you and others did
not mean to come across the way you sounded recently re: WA. That you
assume that everyone is American? When obviously you do not read the email
adress, otherwise you would know I do not!
