I don't mean to pick on Barbara, but I think this illustrates a common lack
of knowledge about the U.S. criminal justice system. All of the Western
European countries have either abolished or "effectively abandoned" (i.e.
they don't use it) the death penalty, as have most Latin American
countries. The U.S. is one of only about 6 countries that allows the state
execution of criminals below the age of 18.
A lack of familiarity with the practices of other countries makes it easier
to go on thinking of the U.S. as a progressive, tolerant society and makes
the practice seem less "cruel and unusual".
