Well, I'll admit that I'm not really an authority on this part of the
question. However, I was recently talking to a person who works for the
Alliance for the Wild Rockies who mentioned to me that there is serious
talk about trying to get the buffalo on the list of endangered species in
order to prevent them from being slaughtered. However, I do not know who
is leading this effort or how it might come about.
I did find some interesting information at the endangered species
coalition website at www.stopextinction.org I was unaware of the
Endangered Species Recovery Act of 1999 which I guess is currently in
Congress. There is a lot of information and the Act itself is hypertexed
at their website.
I do know that the buffalo are not currently on the list, which is really
stupid, since the ONLY remaining wild herd in the US is the one in
Yellowstone. That sounds pretty endangered to me. But I know very little
about the procedure for getting a species on the list.... ignorance is not
bliss, it's embarassing!
Oh, and I agree that selling off Buffalo bones is morbid and disgusting,
unless the money is being used to somehow save the remaining buffalo,
which I'm darned near sure it is not...
ciao for now
