Human rights movement growing 

WASHINGTON (AP) - Participation in the human rights movement grew
throughout the world over the past decade, mainly because the Internet made
it easier to spread the word about violations, Amnesty International said
Wednesday. "In almost every country, including the most repressive
countries, there are active indigenous human rights organizations at work,"
William F. Schulz, the organization's executive director, said as the group
issued its annual report on human rights trends. The Internet has been a
major factor in raising awareness because it has allowed information to
flow freely in and out of countries with censor-heavy governments. See full

Japan OKs oral contraceptive sales 

TOKYO (AP) - Japan has approved applications from nine pharmaceutical firms
to manufacture, import and market the birth control pill, the government
said Wednesday. The move comes two weeks after the Health Ministry's
Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council submitted a recommendation to permit
use of the pill - after nine years of deliberation. Sales of the oral
contraceptive in Japan will begin in September to women with a
prescription, said Health Ministry official Takao Matsuda. See full story
