Philosophy and the Future of the "condition f�minine"
9th Symposium of the International Association of Women
Philosophers (IAPh)
Zurich, Switzerland
October 11-14, 2000
To consider developments within the broad spectrum of feminist
philosophy, both in terms of its content and methodology, is the goal of
the 9th Symposium sponsored by the IAPh. One of the central themes
will be an exploration of Perspectives on Justice. Several sessions
will be devoted to its exploration, as well as the keynote address.
Papers on other themes are, nonetheless, explicitly sought and very
welcome; additional sessions will be scheduled for them.
The central theme, Perspectives on Justice, takes up one of the basic
concerns of feminist philosophy which has sought, in various and
sometimes controversial ways, to develop a mode of thinking that can
form the basis of nondiscriminatory economic, societal, and political
behavior. The criticisms that feminists and others have raised against
classical theories of justice have led people to question and suggest
modifications to classical theories--their contents, methods, concepts
of rationality, tasks, and areas of applicability, etc. Out of this
debate have arisen alternative ideas about how we should conceptualize
the normative realm of human interrelations, such ideas as replacing
justice with concepts of care, sympathy, solidarity, recognition, etc.
Deconstructive and postcolonial points of view stress the differences
among women and the many-leveled nature of power relations. They bring
new challenges to theoretical and critical discussions and critiques of
justice such as the economic and political developments that are taking
place in the name of an ongoing globalization or denationalization.
Until now the dominant theories of justice, as well as the feminist
critiques, have generally assumed a political paradigm of a system of
individual sovereign states. In the face of these new developments it
certainly seems that restricting questions of well being to a single
political entity is problematic. Instead we must revisit the question
of responsibility; justice, too, needs to be reconceptualized in the
realm of the transnational.
Call for Papers
To submit a paper (20 minutes maximum), please send a one page abstract
along with a list of key words and a short professional biography no
later than November 15, 1999.
