The focus of this conference is a family of issues that arise at the
intersection between feminist philosophy of science and naturalized
approaches to philosophy of science. Many feminist philosophers of science
regard their work as a form of naturalized epistemology, at least in the
minimal sense that they address questions about the gendered dimensions of
science which require an empirical consideration of the history and
practice of science. At the same time a great many advocates of naturalism
in philosophy of science have made the case for broadening Quinean and
cognitivist forms of naturalism to include, among the empirical disciplines
that serve as their resources, the same range of social and historical
sciences that have been prominent influences in feminist philosophy of
science.

This is an important juncture at which to consider a number of questions
raised by these parallels and mutual influences:
what exactly are the points of convergence and divergence between
feminist philosophies of science and naturalized philosophy of science?
what does work in each of these emerging traditions have to offer the other?
and how do feminists and other advocates of naturalistic approaches deal
with normative (ethical and political) questions raised by and about the
sciences?

Feminism and Naturalism has been organized as a working conference, built
around presentations by invited speakers and colleagues at UM-St. Louis and
Washington University who are actively engaged in work on the issues
central to this conference. Confirmed speakers include:

William Bechtel (Washington University): On the Naturalistic Turn
