Hi Friends,

I want to share with you the name of a wonderful novel I just read by Ruth
Ozeki, who is Japanese-American. The main character in the book, called MY
YEAR OF MEATS, is supposed to help sell beef to Japan by making a weekly
documentary called "My American Wife!" It's an extremely funny and moving,
and at times horrifying, book, that exposes the chemical treatment of beef
in the feedlots and the connection between DES/hormones/antibiotics and
meat and cancer in the 1990s. It's sort of a multicultural rewrite of THE
JUNGLE, a book about the meatpacking industry that changed regulations more
than a generation ago. I enjoyed it immensely. --E.
