Hi Evelyn - I didn't want you to think that I had forgotten about your
email, which I haven't! I have been researching the web for you and will
get the information to you shortly. You are right, there is alot more to
International Women's Day than celebrating the status of single women, or
the goodness of the married woman etc. It is, essentially, a thrust for
gender equality between women and men - in all aspects of life. And, it is
celebrated worldwide, with different foci as appropriate for the area within
which the effort is being made. It is also a part of the United Nations
program for worldwide equality. Anyway, I will get this all together for
you and email you again shortly. Do you have a deadline for this? Bye for
now, Leslie

Subject: About International Women's Day
>Hello!

>I'd like to have some help for my schoolwork from you. I'm writing an
>essay about celebrating the International Women's Day. The point that I
>want to make there is that people here, in Estonia, have quite wrong
>understanding about what this holiday is all about. Here it's celebrated
>as if it was another Mother's Day, with only one difference -- it's more
>meant for single women.
>
>On the 8th March we'll have the same propaganda of tratitional roles of
>women (like motherhood, being a good wife for one's husband, etc.) as on
>Mother's day. I even remember one (male) friend of mine asking me last
>year if it was suitable to wish me Happy Women's Day since I was a
>feminist. Also, the beauty contests are held on that day.
>
>So, I'd be really grateful if you could tell me how the 8th of March is
>celebrated everywhere else -- is it a holiday for working women or more
>something like it is here, in Estonia. Also, I'd be grateful if you gave
>me some web-addresses where I could find out about the history and
>traditions of that day. Please mail me on my personal address:
