The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation,
which has provided educational and research support for international women
graduate students since 1917, will present its first international biennial
symposium-International Perspectives: The Political, Social, and Economic
Impact of Education for Women and Girls-on Nov. 17-18, 2000, at the Wyndham
Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Policy-makers, scholars, and practitioners are invited to explore how women
have used their education to become catalysts for change in social,
political, and economic arenas in their countries. While global in scope,
the symposium will focus regionally on Africa, Latin America, the Pacific
Rim, and countries of the former Soviet Union.

Symposium sessions will be organized into policy and practice tracks. Highly
interactive presentations-including panel discussions, demonstration/poster
sessions, and dialogues-will focus on political environments, social issues,
and economic impact.

The symposium sessions will include a broad range of diverse presentations.
Topics will include women's roles in literacy, higher education, and
economic development; the role of women's nongovernmental organizations; and
women in leadership and decision-making positions. An oral summary of key
points and issues will be presented at the close of the event. The symposium
findings, outcomes, and recommendations will be published in printed and
electronic format and disseminated broadly.
