TORONTO ATMOSPHERIC FUND SEEKS CONFERENCE ORGANIZER

The Toronto Atmospheric Fund (TAF), an agency of the City of
Toronto, is seeking a Project Manager to organize a North
American conference on the urban heat island. Toronto is warmer
than surrounding rural areas due to the urban heat island effect.
Dark surfaces and infrastructure present in the city amplify the
heating capacity of incoming solar radiation. Over the long-term
municipal policies and measures that encourage urban reforestation
and more reflective roofs and streets can cool ambient temperatures,
creating more healthful micro-climates for people, reducing the hot
air that air conditioning pumps into the urban environment, and
ameliorating heat induced smog levels. The conference will examine
the methodologies used in research and development of urban heat
adaptation strategies, both in the long and short term; identify barriers
to the research and implementation of the strategies; and explore
avenues and strategies for future research. The conference will
allow scientists working in Canada and the United States working
on this issue to provide up-to-date results of their research and
network with each other. Municipal policy makers, project managers,
and environmentalists will present case examples of model policies
and program in action in North American cities.

The manager help develop an agenda for the three-day conference,
recruit of speakers, facilitate the submission of research papers,
help create information and promotional materials, and find and
negotiate a venue for the conference. The successful candidate
will have superb organizational abilities, experience organizing
workshops and/or conferences, and preferably a background in
environmental studies. Experience working in and facilitating
scientific research a plus. This is a six-month contract with
potential for extension to one year. The position is funded by a
grant from the federal Climate Change Action Fund. The deadline
for application is October 7, 2000. The salary range is from $40,000
to 60,000 per annum. Send a letter of application, resume and
references to Phil Jessup, Executive Director, Toronto Atmospheric
Fund, City Hall, 100 Queen St., West, Toronto, Ontario M5H 2N2,
ph. (416) 392-0271, email [EMAIL PROTECTED], or to
