I believe that only in that atmosphere of intellectual freedom will we solve the problems before us now." --Rachel Carson To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rachel Carson's first published book, Under the Sea Wind, and in anticipation of the 40th anniversary next year of Silent Spring, the National Conservation Training Center will hold a symposium on Rachel Carson and the Conservation Movement: Past, Present, and Future. The symposium will blend history, science, and the arts. The symposium will include readings, a Carson play, artwork from Carson's books, experiential workshops in the Center's labs and surrounding woods, and plenary sessions by distinguished scientists, writers, and conservationists. A tentative speaker list includes: Linda Lear, Barry Lopez, Theo Colborn, Sylvia Earle, Pat Hynes, Roland C. Clement, Chandler Robbins, David Pimental, Tom Butler, Mary Henry, Jim Kurth, Ward Feurt and Diana Post. The event will be held in Shepherdstown, West Virginia 70 miles west of Washington, D.C. The National Conservation Training Center is the home of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and an educational facility for all conservationists.
