Research Associate
The Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston at the John F. Kennedy School of
Government and the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seek an individual
to create a set of information resources documenting geographic, economic,
and social change in the several neighborhoods that border a set of
contiguous parks and open spaces in the City of Boston, including the Arnold
Arboretum, Forest Hills Cemetery, Franklin Park, and the former Boston State
Hospital (part of which has become the Boston Nature Center of the
Massachusetts Audubon Society). These resources should be designed to help
planners and neighborhood stakeholders come to a common understanding of the
causes of present conditions and work together to develop long-term visions
and strategies for the area.
The position will be based at the Rappaport Institute and reports to the
Institute's director, Dr. Charles C. Euchner.
Required:
o a master's degree and 2 years' experience in planning or community/
economic development, or a bachelor's degree and equivalent experience
o broad knowledge of the issues confronting urban parks and neighborhoods
o demonstrated ability to conduct independent research based on documentary
sources, spatial data, and interviews (ideally, with planning and parks
experts, government officials, and community leaders)
o significant analytical experience with databases and geographic
information systems (ideally Microsoft Access, and ArcInfo or MapInfo)
o demonstrated ability to write, edit, and manage the production of printed
and/or online information for a broad public audience
Preferred:
o familiarity with this area of Boston, which includes parts of five
neighborhoods (Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roslindale)
o demonstrated knowledge of or interest in urban history
Term & Compensation:
The position will last for 1 year. Renewal is possible, contingent on
success in seeking external funding, which in turn depends on producing
high-quality, well-received results from the first year's work. Compensation
will be set in accord with the successful candidate's education and
professional background.
