Subject: RAN's hiring!  Implementation Coordinator

Implementation Coordinator

Job Description

Position:        Implementation Coordinator

Supervisor:    Global Finance Campaigns Director

Salary:            DOE, plus benefits

Status:            Full time, salary

Location:        San Francisco

Deadline:        May 7, 2004

Summary:

Rainforest Action Network (RAN) runs hard-hitting campaigns to drive
corporations to protect the world's forests and their traditional
inhabitants from extractive industries and the effects of climate
change. RAN campaigns work to eliminate the funding and consumption
of forest products derived from the logging of the planet's last
remaining endangered and old growth forests, thereby helping to bring
to an end all extractive industries in old growth forests. Our
campaigns galvanize the public's existing belief that cutting old
growth forests to turn them into 2x4's and pulp is simply unethical,
that climate change is a threat to global ecosystems and the global
economy, and that a mature, modern society has outgrown such
practices. Several dozen top wood and paper buyers and financial
institutions have begun to create policies to address these issues,
with more than four hundred companies in total committing to action.
The Implementation Coordinator will work to ensure that those
commitments are met, and to leverage those actions from top companies
to change the way business is done in the logging, mining, and oil
and gas industry today.

RAN is seeking candidates who possess campaigning skills to influence
key decision-makers within these sectors. RAN's Implementation
Coordinator will work as part of a large campaigns team, and a team
of volunteers and interns. The Implementation Coordinator will work
most closely with RAN's Global Finance and Old Growth Campaign
Directors.

Qualifications:

The Implementation Coordinator position requires superior written and
verbal communication skills, including corporate negotiations,
research, and networking skills. Prioritizing tasks, volunteer
coordination, and the ability to empower and motivate grassroots
activists in carrying out campaign tactics are necessary. The
position requires good decision-making skills, strategic insight,
professional initiative and results-oriented behavior. Previous
successful campaign experience is required; direct action experience
is an asset. Must be willing and able to travel frequently.

Responsibilities:

· Monitor and evaluate compliance by top wood and paper
buyers and financial institutions of existing commitments;

· Identify violation of these commitments and implement
appropriate communications and actions, including the development of
"chain of custody" supply-chain analysis, greenhouse gas audits, and
other project related oversight;

· Through written and verbal communication, participate in
direct communications with executive-level corporate and government
officials;

· Develop "action alerts" and campaign materials to mobilize
allies and members in order to persuade corporate actors to halt
participation in egregious operations;

· Design campaign plans that utilize full range of
non-violent pressure tactics including letter writing, civil
disobedience, advertisements, speaking tours with indigenous
representatives, etc.;

· Assist in the analysis of policy documents by the World
Bank, United Nations Environment Programme Financial Initiative,
World Trade Organization and other trade agreements, including those
proposed by logging and banking industry representatives, etc.;

· Assist local forest protection organizations with the
development of endangered forest policy recommendations to be made to
top corporate actors;

· Develop and maintain relationships with international
organizations, such as the World Rainforest Movement, BankTrack and
others;

· Represent RAN at environmental conferences and provide
motivation and tools to grassroots constituencies. Act as a public
spokesperson for RAN as needed;

· In coordination with the Volunteer and Intern Director,
supervise interns and volunteers working on campaign activities,
including research, execution of outreach, etc;

· Participate in RAN's organizational planning and training
sessions. Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and
safe workplace;

· Report to Global Finance Campaign Director regularly on
accomplishments and plans of action;

· Participate in quarterly performance reviews with the
Global Finance Campaign Director as well as weekly campaign team
meetings.
