Copyright transfer is NOT required to ensure long-term availability of
research articles. All you need is an agreement for limited,
non-exclusive use of the work in perpetuity. That way the creator can
retain copyright, and the publisher can retain use of the work for as
long as humans remain on this planet.

As far as squabbles over future media technologies unheard of in today's
environment, that can be dealt with easily in the contract language
without compromising either the creator's or publisher's long-term
interests.
