2) Technical Corner - Basin Best Management Practices
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This 122-page U.S. Environmental Protection Agency document is the
third volume of the manual Stormwater Best Management Practice
Design Guide. It provides guidance on the design of best management
practices (BMPs) for the mitigation of the environmental impacts
to receiving waters associated with urban runoff. Water resources
engineers have designed small and large ponds for many years for
a wide range of applications, including farm ponds, recreational
ponds, water supply reservoirs, flood control reservoirs,
infiltration basins and multiple use reservoirs. This volume
provides design guidelines for a group of stormwater management
(SWM) BMPs broadly referred to as basins or ponds. The objectives
of this manual is to provide practical design guides that when
followed, result in SWM BMPs facilities that maximize pollutant
removal and flood control.
3) Power Utility - HyperCalc Plus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HyperCalc Plus is a Windows based software developed at Utah State
University as part of a joint project involving Utah State
University, the Utah Department of Transportation, and the Federal
Highway Administration. It provides a convenient means for
converting between English and Metric (SI) units. There are 13
Contexts for common units. In addition there are two specialty
groups of units: "Civil Structural" containing 12 contexts
including mass, force, pressure, moments, etc. and "Electrical"
containing 18 contexts.

HyperCalc Plus also provides forms for "Transportation" equations
including: Sight Distance, Vertical Curve, Vertical Passing
Distance, Horizontal Curve, and Passing Distance. Forms for
"Drainage" equations include: Continuity, Darcy-Weisbach, Friction
Factor, Hazen-Williams, Mannings, Circular Shape Properties,
Trapezoid Shape Properties, Rational Formula, and Reynolds Number.

Handbook of Hydrology
http://www.civilbookstore.com/0070397325.html
--------------------------------------------------
An expert and highly practical reference on both the theory and
practice involved, the Handbook of Hydrology is a much needed
compendium of essential information and data filling a void in
the literature for practicing hydrologists and professionals in
related fields.

Aquifer Hydraulics : A Comprehensive Guide to Hydrogeologic Data Analysis
http://www.civilbookstore.com/0471185027.html
--------------------------------------------------
This book offers the most detailed and comprehensive coverage
available of aquifer hydraulics, testing, and analysis for a wide
range of aquifer and well types under differing conditions. It
presents the theoretical foundations and limitations of existing
analytical models for each ground water system, along with an
in-depth examination of hydrogeologic data analysis methods.
Translating theory into practice, detailed examples illustrate
the real-world application of well test techniques-an invaluable
aid to readers in the design, execution, and analysis of their
own field tests.

Rainwater Catchment Systems for Domestic Supply: Design, Construction and
Inplementation
http://www.civilbookstore.com/1853394564.html
--------------------------------------------------
This book reviews the art of roof and ground catchment systems for
rainwater. The water collected can be used for household or other
purposes. The designs are aimed for individuals with limited access
to electricity and/or civic water utilities. The text includes
drawings, photographs and step-by-step instructions.

Dam Hydraulics
http://www.civilbookstore.com/0471972894.html
--------------------------------------------------
This book develops the main themes of water flow in dam structures,
emphasizing the hydraulic principles governing the design,
construction and refurbishment of dams. Opening with an overview of
the various dam structures, it then develops fundamental topics
including: reservoir sedimentation, waves due to landslides and
dambreak waves. The authors provide a systematic analysis of the
various phenomena associated with dam hydraulics, illustrated with
appropriate figures and photographs of laboratory models and
prototype structures.

9) Durable Plastic Bridges
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The northbound bridge over De Neveu Creek near Fond du Lac,
Wisconsin, looks just like the two-lane southbound crossing, which
is made conventionally from concrete poured over steel rebar. But
in 75 years the difference will be clear. Inside the northbound
bridge’s concrete deck, builders used a prefabricated plastic grid
instead of steel. Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
who tested the fiber-reinforced polymer bridge expect it to last
at least twice as long as its steel counterpart because it resists
corrosion from the de-icing salt and water that seeps through
surface cracks in the concrete. In icy states, the durability is
worth the 35 percent higher cost.
10) Nano-sponges for Toxic Metals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Microscopic particles honeycombed with holes only nanometers wide
soon could help purify industrial runoff, coal plant smoke, crude
oil and drinking water of toxic metals, experts say. The particles,
made of glass or natural diatomaceous earth, are 5 millionths to
50 millionths of a meter wide and filled with holes a thousand
times smaller. The surfaces of these particles can bear a variety
of flavors or coatings that soak up specific toxic metals—for
instance, sulfurous organic coatings attract mercury, while
coppery organic coatings bind to arsenic and radioactive metals
known as actinides. The particles' spongy nature gives them an
incredible 6,400 square feet to nearly 11,000 square feet of
surface area per gram of material with which to draw in toxins.

11) New Microscope Allows Scientists to Track a Functioning Protein with
Atomic-level Precision
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Stanford University research team has designed the first
microscope sensitive enough to track the real-time motion of a
single protein down to the level of its individual atoms. Writing
in the November 13, 2005 online issue of the journal Nature, the
Stanford researchers explain how the new instrument allowed them
to settle long-standing scientific debates about the way genes
are copied from DNA—a biochemical process that's essential to life.
