Overview

A research project is being conducted through the Great Basin Landscape
Ecology Lab (http://www.cabnr.unr.edu/weisberg/ ) at the University of
Nevada at Reno, quantifying understory regeneration in post-fire
pinyon-juniper woodlands. Our landscape-level study focuses on patterns
of post-fire succession as influenced by biotic and abiotic factors,
with particular emphasis on what determines establishment of native
sagebrush grassland species vs. the invasive annual, cheatgrass. This is
part of a larger, Joint Fire Science Program-funded study of bird and
butterfly habitat change in response to fire and fuels treatments in
central Nevada. The project provides a great opportunity for learning
about plant communities in the Great Basin and gaining valuable field
experience in landscape ecology and plant community ecology.
