An important factor often not taken into account when considering alternative 
energies is that the cheaper, cleaner energies (solar/wind power) might be more 
harmful to the environment than their dirty counterparts (oil and nuclear 
power). 
   
  The reason cheaper and cleaner energies may be more harmful to the 
environment is because they would allow many industries to increase 
productivity and subsequently increase waste production. Factories, for 
example, have an alotted amount of money for energy consumption. If a cheaper 
energy source becomes available it allows for an increase in factory 
productivity for essentially the same cost they were paying before.

  I think an important question to consider is how to manage all the waste 
alternative energies will produce in the long run....
