PREDOCTORAL SUMMER FELLOWSHIP AT TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY-SAN MARCOS

Texas State University-San Marcos is proud to announce the creation of a
Predoctoral Summer
Fellowship. The Fellowship brings doctoral students only lacking dissertation
(ABD) from
underrepresented groups to Texas State to teach and/or collaborate with Texas
State faculty on
research and teaching.

The program supports the Texas State 2004-2009 University Strategic Plan’s call
for an
“increasingly diverse student body” by enhancing “the recruitment and retention
rates of African-
American and Hispanic/Latino faculty”. One method of increasing the number of
underrepresented faculty is by inviting doctoral candidates that are finished
with their course work
and are now writing their dissertations (ABD) to spend June and July working
with colleagues in
their field and students on the Texas State campus and to consider them as
potential faculty
candidates.

The program’s start date: Summer 2006.

Expectations for visiting scholars

The visiting scholars will spend their time on campus collaborating with
research faculty and
contributing to a range of academic activities that will support professional
development.

Criteria and process of selection

Three Fellows will be selected. Any tenure track faculty member at Texas
State, who wishes to
participate by serving as a Fellow’s mentor, may nominate a graduate student
from another
university who is in their field for the fellowship opportunity. The graduate
student must come
from an underrepresented group, have completed all of their graduate course
work and be
working on their dissertation. Personnel committee and department chair
support is also
required. The college dean will then submit the application to the Graduate
College by April 17,
2006.

For candidates nominated by Texas State faculty, the application must include:

I.                    A detailed proposal describing the nature of the
collaboration including:

a)      A description of the reason you would like to work with the Fellow

b)     A detailed description of the teaching/research/performance activities
on which you intend
to collaborate

c)      A statement describing the specific benefit to the potential Fellow

d)     A description of how you propose to integrate the Fellow into your
program or department

e)     A timeline for accomplishing the proposed activities

II.                  A copy of the potential Fellow’s curriculum vitae

III.                Three references from faculty members in the potential
Fellow’s home program (one
reference must be the dissertation chair validating ABD status)

IV.                An official transcript

Notice of this opportunity will also be disseminated nationally and candidates
may submit an
application directly to the Graduate College. The Graduate College will
ascertain the availability of
a faculty mentor before processing the application.

Stipend Detail

The basic support will be an $11,000 stipend for the months of June and July
that includes living
expenses. Additional support will be available to cover travel expenses for a
return trip in the
next year. The University may assist in locating university housing according
to availability. The
host department will provide access to work space, computer and other equipment
necessary to
conduct research.
