SCIENCE DIRECTOR COSTA RICA Organization for Tropical Studies The Science Director is responsible for defining=20 the future research agenda for OTS. This is a=20 supervisory position that includes, among other=20 responsibilities, the oversight of the Science=20 activities undertaken by the Station Directors at=20 the three field stations in Costa Rica. Serving=20 as a team leader, the incumbent will coordinate=20 with Station Directors the fostering of Science=20 activities at and around OTS field stations. The=20 successful candidate will be actively involved in=20 writing grant proposals and fostering=20 collaborative initiatives in emerging areas of=20 tropical science, with scientists from member=20 institutions and strategic allies. The candidate=20 should have a demonstrated record of excellence=20 in tropical science as well as a strong record of=20 success in obtaining external research support.=20 The incumbent is expected to develop fund-raising=20 initiatives with other OTS staff to support=20 scientific programs in Costa Rica and increase=20 the number and scope of scientific programs implemented by OTS in general.
The incumbent will develop and maintain contacts=20 with multidisciplinary research teams within the=20 OTS membership and organize and implement=20 workshops and expert-groups gatherings to discuss=20 research directions in emerging areas of=20 scientific interest. This individual will=20 represent OTS at national and international=20 scientific meetings. The successful candidate=20 will have the ability to work with=20 multidisciplinary teams in multicultural environments. The Science Director will coordinate the Research=20 Experience Program for graduate and undergraduate=20 students as well as the Fellowships Program. The=20 Science Director will work closely with the=20 Education Director in the development of the=20 Research Experience Program and must also be a=20 team player and feel comfortable in an=20 environment of co-equal program directors. This position is responsible for recruiting and=20 hiring scientific staff, as well as, directly or=20 indirectly, managing and evaluating their=20 performance. The Science Director will develop=20 and oversee budgets for all Science Programs within the Organization. This position reports to the Vice President for=20 Costa Rican Academic Programs and is located in=20 the San Jos=E9 office in Costa Rica. In-country and=20 international travel is required. Applicants=20 should hold a Ph.D. and have at least five years=20 of relevant education and experience. Strong=20 Spanish skills and the ability to work=20 comfortably in multiple cultural settings are=20 required. Salary is commensurate with=20 experience.
