To those interested in the topic of gender equity in the sciences, I
strongly recommend the book:

The Door in the Dream:
Conversations with Eminent Women in Science

This remarkable book follows women in the National Academy born since
1940. In each chapter, conversations with these women illuminate the
diverse ways in which women succeed in science, with and without
families. I found several common threads: all had supportive partners,
all did it with one or several supportive mentors, and all had different
life paths. I strongly agree with others on this listserve who have
suggested that one should not "wait" for the right time to have a
family. However, with that important choice to start a family, one
needs to be flexible and understand that all pathways to success may not
be linear.
