There is currently one, full-time, overtime exempt position available in the
Computer Applications Lab (CAL) on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State
College.  The candidate pool established from this announcement may be used
to fill comparable permanent, full-time, part-time and temporary vacancies

The Manager of Scientific Computing, working collaboratively with the
natural and physical science faculty and staff, identifies implements and
supports the use of technology in an innovative science lab and field
curriculum.  This is a full-time, overtime-exempt, classified position. 
 
Primary responsibilities of this position include managing the
administrative operations of the Computer Applications Lab (CAL), local
network infrastructure, file, print and application servers, mobile lab
computers, and other hardware and software located in specialized science
labs. Technical expertise in integrating Geographic Information System (GIS)
applications in the sciences is an important element of this position.

COMPENSATION
• Skill and ability may be considered in salary placement.
• Salary range is $4,315 to $5,522 per month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
• Provide innovative, technology-based solutions to a wide spectrum of
science education problems that promote and enhance learning experiences for
students. 
• Support the broad use of GIS in the curriculum 
• Manage overall operations of two 25 seat scientific computer labs,
mid-scale network infrastructure, multiple application servers, and an
additional 40+ client machines and peripherals in two lab buildings in
direct support of the lab and field sciences. 
• Manage operational budget and evaluate budgetary needs, review/order
software, hardware, peripheral equipment and supplies. 
• Maintain professional contacts with vendors, distributors, other computer
staff on campus and other higher-ed institutions.  
• Ensure that data and network are maintained using best practices,
including evaluating data and network security, file access issues, hardware
functionality and redundancy, and reliable backup strategies. 
• Work closely with other IT personnel and groups that support academic
technologies to ensure the needs of scientific computing and the
technologies in the scientific curriculum are well represented.  
• Support academic programs in the sciences by developing new applications
and technologies, provide related workshops, teaching materials and academic
support as necessary. 
• Directly support and coordinate with science faculty to determine
individual technology needs as well as recommending best practices for
integrating technology into academic programs. 
• Manage software licensing and ensure compliance with WAC, TESC policy and
federal law regarding copyright. 
• Supervise 1 FTE IT Specialist, conduct performance evaluations and review
tasks and projects on a regular basis. 
• Hire, supervise and train 12 student employees as lab technicians in
support of operations of the computer applications lab. 
• Oversee and install, configure and maintain hardware software sets for
client machines and servers. 
  • Provide consultation and technology support for faculty research needs. 
• Maintain technical operations of the campus weather station. 
• Maintain GIS Database, software and infrastructure used for both
curricular and research activities. 
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES 
• Develop budget forecasts for computing equipment, staffing and space.
• Develop implementation plans for system migrations and upgrades.
• Research new technologies, initiatives and application development.
• Provide project-level data analysis services and application development
to faculty conducting research. 
• Sponsor Individual Learning Contracts, student internships and act as a
mentor for students.
• Other duties as required. 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 
• Ability and interest to interpret and synthesize problems, resolve with
appropriate technology and effectively communicate solutions to the science
faculty, students and staff. 
• Excellent knowledge of curricular usage of technology and computing
resources including topics such as computer science, web application
development and information systems administration. 
• Knowledge of current as well as fundamental physical, natural, or
biological science topics and experience with current technologies such as
GIS and Bioinformatics that are used to support these disciplines. 
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, and knowledge of
personnel management. 
• Excellent customer service skills. 
• Ability to problem-solve and to use diagnostic software and hardware tools. 
• Ability to evaluate software for potential curricular use and purchase. 
• Current knowledge of computing systems, software directions, and computer
networking infrastructure. 
• Demonstrated skills in technical project management in a science related
field. 
• Ability to work collaboratively in a culturally diverse community of
faculty, staff, and students. 
• Knowledge of the UNIX, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh operating systems,
including networking and as inter-operability of systems. 
• Ability to install, configure and test hardware, network, cabling, and
software components. 
• Ability to work in a command line based operating environment. 
• Ability to develop, debug and install patches and program scripts. 
• Ability to move and install computer systems and peripherals weighing
about 30 pounds. 
• Ability to correct software anomalies in both Windows and Macintosh based
environments. 
• Excellent fiscal and project management skills. 
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 
• Persons hired must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility
within three (3) days of beginning work and may be required to submit to a
background check. 
• This position is assigned to part of the institution that is covered by a
union shop provision of the Department of Personnel/Higher Education
Division.  Therefore, new employees are required to pay dues to the
Federation of State Employees within thirty (30) days of their hiring date.
